Materials required
- A New Way of Painting PRIMO poster paint bottles with flow-control nozzle
- Paper or cardboard sheets
- Any templates or guiding drawings (optional)
Activitiy
- Introduction to Pointillism technique: explain to children that Pointillism is a technique in which images are created by applying small colour dots close together. Each dot represents a piece of the final “puzzle” that, when viewed from a distance, creates unique shapes and shades.
- Paints preparation: use A New Way of Painting PRIMO poster paint bottles with flow-control nozzle to apply small dots of colour to the paper. Encourage children to choose two complementary colours (such as blue and orange or yellow and purple) and create juxtapositions to achieve a visual effect of contrast and brightness.
- Create a pointillist work of art: ask children to begin filling the surface of the paper with colour dots, working on small areas at a time. Explain that a complex drawing is not necessary; each small dot will help bring their masterpiece to life. Children can experiment with placing dots away from each other, or closer together to create shadows and depth.
- Observe the result as a whole: once the work is finished, invite children to observe it from a distance. Guide children in discovering how, from this perspective, the single dots blend together and reveal a more complex and detailed picture.
Benefits
Calm and concentration: Doting helps children focusing on the activity and encourages them to proceed with patience.
Development of eye-hand coordination: Because of the control needed to apply small dots, children practice precision and control skills.
Art education: Discovering colours and their effect when juxtaposed is a first step in understanding colour theories.
