Explore the world of Scrape painting!

Activity goals

Introducing children to the technique of Scrape painting, having them experiment with the use of lines, dots and spots of colour. Developing an understanding of colour gradients and overlays, by observing visual interactions between hues and textures. Practicing precision and control of movements. Fostering imaginative and creative thinking, leaving room for interpretation of shapes and landscapes created by colours.

Materials required

  • A New Way of Painting PRIMO poster paint bottles with flow-control nozzle
  • Normal paper or cardboard
  • Spatula (can also be a plastic card or ruler)
  • Pencils or markers (to complete details)

Activities

  1. Introduction to Scrape painting Technique: explain to children that Scrape painting is a technique where paint is applied and “smeared” on the paper to create amazing visual effects. It is a fun way to observe how colours mix and transform with each other.
  2. Paints preparation: ask children to place dots or lines of A New Way of Painting PRIMO poster paint on the paper, using the flow-control nozzle to dose the right amount. They can choose different colours, positioning them far apart or close together depending on the desired effect.
  3. Creating the Scrape Effect: give children a palette knife or a ruler and show them how to “pull” color, creating lines and shading. They can explore different movements to achieve long lines, waves, or small splashes. Encourage children to experiment with different movements and amounts of color, observing how colours blend and create unique overlays.
  4. Interpretation of the final work: once the work is complete, invite children to observe their results from different angles by asking them what they see: shapes, landscapes, or imaginary creatures? Provide them with pencils or markers and let them complete the work with additional details, such as outlines, eyes, or background elements.

Benefits

Coordination and precision: Using PRIMO bottles trains fine motor skills and paint control.
Understanding cause-and-effect relationships: Thanks to the use of the palette knife, children see how colours react and transform, developing curiosity about art and visual science.
Development of imagination: Children can interpret the risults and add creative details.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Let children explore freely, without them worrying about the end result. Each work is unique and unrepeatable.
  • Showing examples of Scrape painting can offer inspiration, but it is important to encourage personal experimentation.

Thanks to the ergonomic design of A New Way of Painting PRIMO bottles and their flow-control nozzle, Scrape painting becomes accessible even to young children.
