Activity Goals
Introducing children to the technique of painting with vinyl glue, while mixing it with poster paint or watercolours to create paintings with vibrant tones and a glossy finish. Encouraging artistic experimentation and the discovery of unique effects, stimulating creativity and interest in mixed-media painting techniques.
Materials needed
- PRIMO vinyl glue in a small bottle with flow-control nozzle
- Poster paint or watercolors
- Brushes of different sizes
- Cardboard or wrapping paper
- Small plates or jars (for mixing glue and colours)
- Sticks or teaspoons (for mixing colours)
- Pot of water to clean brushes
Activity
Before starting, we recommend explaining to children that glue painting is a special technique for creating bright colours and achieving a glossy finish. It is ideal for giving an original and long-lasting effect to works, while also making them more durable.
- Paint preparation
Pour small amounts of vinyl glue on the small plates and add a few drops of either poster paint or watercolour of different colours. Show children how to use a chopstick or teaspoon to mix until they reach a smooth result. Ask children to choose their favorite colour combinations. - Creating the artwork
Give a sheet of cardboard or wrapping paper to the children and encourage them to paint using glue-based colours. Suggest they experiment with overlapping layers and different movements to see how the colours mix and transform. - Observe the transformation
Once completed, invite children to observe their painting as the glue dries. In fact, as it dries, the glue will give the paint a glossy, durable effect. - Interpretation and discussion
When the work is completely dry, ask children to share with the group what they have accomplished and to describe how they see their work after the glossy finish. At this final stage, we recommend leaving room for interpretations and stories children might want to tell through their paintings.
Educational benefits of the activity
- Colour experimentation: Children can learn how to mix colours and observe how unique visual effects can be created with glue.
- Fine motor skills: Using brushes and painting movements helps develop precision and coordination.
- Texture and finish awareness: Children will discover the transformation of colours and surfaces as the glue dries, appreciating the changes in texture and gloss.
Suggestions for parents and teachers
- Let children experiment freely: the beauty of this technique lies in the surprise of the final result.
- It is helpful to work on a protected surface and to remind children that once dry, glue painting will be more durable and brilliant.
- For younger children, starting with one colour at a time can help them understand the technique better, while older children can mix multiple colors for more complex effects.
- Remember to wash the brushes at the end of the activity.
